2. NUMBERS AT A GLANCE 🔢

From 2018 to last year, Malaysia lost up to RM3.4 bil due to electricity theft for cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) mining, according to Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir. These thefts harm Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and the nation, as miners bypass meters, believing their activities undetectable. Fun fact — Malaysia is among the world’s top 10 Bitcoin mining countries, ranking at 7th and contributing 2.5% to the Bitcoin network hashrate.

Almost 1.8 mil people in the UK now owe at least GBP50,000 in student debt, with over 61,000 having balances exceeding GBP100,000 and 50 people owing upwards of GBP200,000, according to data obtained by BBC News from the Student Loans Company (SLC). And this is in a region where there is a maximum fee of GBP9,250 per year since 2017. No wonder people are questioning the value of “the” certificate — would one just be better off doing their own gig?

The appointment of Chinese actress Fan Bingbing as the 2024 Visit Melaka ambassador involved a sponsorship amounting to RM498,347. However, the state government contributed only RM77,850, or 16% of the total cost, with the remaining amount covered by several companies, according to State Tourism, Heritage, Art and Culture Committee chairman Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman. The statesman added that there were almost 1.2 bil searches about Fan Bingbing during the three days she was in Melaka and the searches for Malacca alone reached 445 mil. It's a pretty decent ROI. When she’s getting her Datukship?

More Mr G's intervention in the digital space

  • Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has reiterated the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) earlier announcement that all social media platforms need to apply for an Application Service Provider Class Licence, which the lot was exempted from before this. Failure by the social media companies to do so before the Jan 1, 2025 deadline will lead to the end of their operations in the country.

  • After the international concert’s ‘kill switch’, the Government plans to do a 1975 to social media companies to enhance cyber security. The bill on the ‘kill switch’ will be tabled in the Parliament this October. According to Law Minister Azalina Othman, the future implementation of the ‘kill switch’ will put more burden of responsibilities towards the social media companies to play their role and be accountable in tackling online crimes such as online scams, cyberbullying, dissemination of child sexual abuse materials, as well as harassment and sexual extortion.

Scorpene in the spotlight again for the wrong reasons
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is currently receiving new information regarding an alleged discrepancy in the acquisition of the Scorpene-class submarines from France back in 2002. The purchase of the submarines was overseen by the incarcerated Najib Razak, who was the defence minister at the time. Based on the new leads obtained, RM42 mil was allegedly misappropriated by companies belonging to family members of the owner of the said company that received the RM530 mil contract for support services concerning the purchase of the submarine. The company that received the RM530 mil contract was Perimekar Sdn Bhd, a company that was only set up in 2001, a few months before the submarines were purchased, and had no relevant experience or expertise in managing submarines. Recap on this Scorpene scandal here by Malaysiakini.
